VCU Health Breaks Ground on $90M Pauley Heart Center Pavilion in Richmond's Diamond District

VCU Health broke ground on a $90M, 93,000 sq ft heart center in Richmond. Here's what's planned, when it opens, and what it means for medical equipment.

Construction site for a new two-story outpatient heart center pavilion in Richmond, Virginia

Richmond's healthcare landscape is growing again. On April 29, 2026, VCU Health and city leaders gathered in Richmond's Diamond District to break ground on the new Pauley Heart Center Pavilion, an outpatient facility built to expand access to what U.S. News & World Report has named the top heart hospital in Virginia for the fourth consecutive year.

What's being built

The $90 million, 93,000-square-foot, two-story pavilion will sit on a 7-acre site on Sherwood Avenue, near VCU Health's Brook Road Campus, with nearby access to I-64, I-95 and public transportation. Plans call for non-invasive cardiology services, exam and consult rooms, infusion and recovery bays, procedural suites, and a retail pharmacy, plus a cardiac rehab center featuring the state's first full-size cardiac rehab walking track. The building will also include MRI and CT imaging, aimed at cutting wait times for complex cases, along with more than 450 surface parking spaces. Occupancy is expected in 2028.

Why it matters for Central Virginia

The pavilion is part of a steady expansion: Pauley Heart Center locations have grown from four to ten across Central Virginia since 2018. By bringing diagnostic imaging, procedural care, cardiac rehab, lab services and clinical research together in one location, the project should make specialized heart care easier to reach for patients who struggle with downtown hospital access.

What it means for medical equipment logistics

A facility like this doesn't come together without a lot of freight. MRI and CT systems, procedural suite equipment, infusion chairs, cardiac rehab machines and lab instruments all have to arrive safely and on schedule, often needing white-glove handling, liftgate delivery and inside placement. As the pavilion moves toward its 2028 opening, and as hospital systems across the country keep expanding outpatient care, demand for experienced medical equipment transport is only growing.
