CT & MRI Relocation Guide
Best practices for moving imaging systems safely
Understanding the Risk
CT and MRI systems are among the most sensitive and valuable devices in any facility. Improper handling can cause magnet quench, detector damage, and six-figure repair bills.
- MRI magnets may require cryogen management or controlled ramp-down.
- CT gantries contain precision detectors highly sensitive to shock and vibration.
- Recalibration and OEM sign-off are almost always required after transport.
Planning the Move
- Engage the OEM early to confirm de-install and re-install requirements.
- Survey the magnet room for door removal, wall openings, or crane access.
- Plan cryogen top-off or quench pipe requirements for MRI systems.
- Reserve rigging, cranes, or gantry systems for heavy lifts.
Protecting the Equipment in Transit
- Use air-ride suspension trailers to minimize road shock.
- Maintain climate control to protect electronics from condensation.
- Apply shock, tilt, and temperature data loggers to each system.
- Secure with rated blocking and bracing rated for the crate weight.
Delivery & Commissioning
- Verify all indicators on arrival before uncrating.
- Position and level per OEM tolerances.
- Schedule OEM calibration, QA, and regulatory testing before clinical use.
- Retain all documentation for compliance and warranty records.
